Is Melissa GREEN?
Sustainability is a matter that has been guiding the initiatives at Melissa’s offices and factories for years.
Melissa works hard to be wholly sustainable ... from its design, through to its production, and then through to the consumer. Everything is created to cause the lowest impact on the environment by using state-of-the-art research resources and technology.
Melissa’s raw material is a plastic called PVC. There are a multitude of different types of plastics. PVC is a Thermoplastic and it is 100% recyclable.
The particular type of PVC that Melissa is made from is MELFLEX. This was created by and is a registered trademark of Grendene S.A. located in Brazil (the parent company of Melissa). Melflex is versatile, durable, totally re-usable and extremely environmentally friendly with no heavy materials in its formulation. Moreover the product is non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, cruelty-free, void of animal products and extremely comfortable on the feet as it is made with mineral salts based on calcium zinc which is not aggressive to your health. PVC is considered to be one of the most sustainable Thermoplastics available.
All of the products are developed taking into consideration the highest standards of design. In other words the typical Melissa model takes into account little consumption of energy in fabrication, a longer useful life, the possibility of reuse and the facility of dismantling and recycling. The fact it is made with only one material makes it even easier. 99% of the industrial waste is also recycled including painting residues, production water and PVC.
“If each person changes one’s life habits with the conscious use of water and electricity, a great step has been taken. Melisssa already adopts this practice and increasingly we are going to be present in people’s lives with sustainable products” concludes Paulo Pedro, Melissa’s General Manager.
Last but not least, Grendene and Melissa also consider the human development of all communities where they have their industrial plants as part of their sustainable commitment. Employees are paid above the average wage and their benefits are exemplary. Reputable consulting companies set the criteria and measure their actions in all of their locations throughout Brazil.
Melissa wants to do more and more with less and less ... with even less consumption of energy and practically no waste generation. This is the challenge of the Melissa team with the launch of each new collection. Just like for you, sustainable development is not just a fad nor an exception for Melissa, but it is part of our day-to-day life.
